More About Land in Common

Challenging capitalism, colonialism, and white supremacy, Land in Common seeks to create different systems for relating to the land and to each other: we decommodify land, permanently removing it from private markets and welcoming it into common stewardship; and we restore the use and care of this land to communities who have been dispossessed of land – by directly returning land to Wabanaki holdership, and by maintaining existing secure, lifelong land tenure for other Global Majority/BIPOC communities.

Our organization is deep into a many-year process of structural transformation to center Global Majority leadership, while building commitment from white/settler folks to show up in solidarity to advance this work. We operated for the past 5 years with a transitional structure–an all-Global Majority/BIPOC Leadership Council, which sets our organizational priorities, and a board and staff collective composed of white land justice activists committed to anti-racist and anti-colonial practice who carry out the priorities set by the Leadership Council. After years of relationship-building and collective learning, we are now implementing a new sociocracy-based structure that deepens our structural commitment to collective liberation and clarifies our roles, accountabilities, and practices of power change and redistribution. We are excited to welcome the vision, energy, and skill of a new Action Circle Lead into this process!
